rtc questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok everyone dont rip on him, hes just a brother of ours on here just like everyone. everyone needs other points of vews some times.
But RTCs grow really fast so watch to make sure that he dosent start outgrowing anyone eles. also watch feeding him, giving him large amounts of food everyday will get him in a hard braking habbit of eatting alot everyday but what im trying to say is once you start slowing down on feedings he will still be hungry and could lead to him eating his tank mates ( if they fit in his mouth or not) now that hes really little its ok but once he starts growing try slowing down slowly. But me I would have an extra tank or divider just incase

That's a important info ! haha

I used to keep mine in 6.5 - 6.8, always acid. Temperature around 28ºC - 29ºC...Feeding EVERYDAY medium amounts. RTC grow up fast, very fast..so, whatever you have in your tank could become feeders!
I would never introduce a RTC again in a com tank...I will only keep a RTC again if I could get a Pound or Monster tank (10.000 L or more).

That's it ;D

I recently bought a 3 inch or so rtc and I was wondering about a few things. What should my water temp be? It stays around 78 . Also what should my Ph be at? Its around 7.3 . He seems heathy he eats every day he seems to be less shy. I'm kinda new to keeping tanks perfect. I used to have 6 channel cats and all I did was there Ph. They all were about 2 foot a peice. Can someone explain nitrates? I understand ammonia but I still haven't tested for it. I'm goingvto the lfs to pick up a few things for it and I think I'm going to buy some water testing supplies

Nitrate is NO3, end product of the nitrogen cycle. Get rid of it through plants(won't survive in a large RTC tank) or water changes...

How large is your tank? It has to be asked ;)

it dont need to be asked you just want to find a reason to bash

The 5 stages of uninformed RTC ownership:

1. Denial- "I've done my research, I will do what needs to be done to keep the fish happy & healthy."

2. Acceptance- "Holy smokes, this fish has grown to be bigger than our cocker spaniel. I need to find a new home for it. I can't afford to spend $10K on a tank large enough to keep it and I live in CT so it's totally impractical to try to keep a tropical pond."

3. Panic- "I can't find anyone to adopt a 3' 30lbs catfish."

4. Guilt- "Since I can't find someone with a tank large enough to adopt it, I'm going to have to euthanize."

5. Shame- "Maybe I didn't do enough research." :screwy:

C'mon bud, be real. You have him in a 10 gallon tank? Take the fish back to the store you bought him from and trade it in for a pictus catfish.

of course, if this is the setup...

20 gallon 4 inch rtc 60 gallon filter. 20 gallon. Albino channel cat and regular channel cat. And a brown bullhead

????? he asked nothing about tank size

If you put it that way...he asked about nitrate no? I will answer this:

RTC by itself will fill up the 20 gallon and overflow it, by itself. He will not have any water to speak of in a 20 gallon, never mind the three other 2 feet+ catfish. So, don't worry about nitrates in the tank because there will not be any water in it to have nitrates dissolved in it.

Better now? ;)

The amount of information posted on this species around the forum is more than enough to make this thread useless. Do more research this thread will undoubtedly cause more problems. Just my opinion
