If you didn't want our opinions, you didn't have to ask! You had to know what we were going to say -- I think I've had this same conversation a hundred times in my life, and some of them are on MFK. Others have the same opinion I do. I think it is immature to purchase an animal without the intent to house it properly. Just because you want it isn't a good enough reason to take an animal from the wild and shorten its long lifespan by twenty years or so. I don't think you're going to hear what you want to hear, so you should probably just go ahead and do what you're going to do anyway! I'm sorry if I sound rude, but these situations frustrate me. Before you buy one, go to a public aquarium that has an Amazon exhibit. See one of these guys, as adults, up close. Then ask yourself if you can stuff that in a 180 gallon tank.

ya it sucks to hear it cuz they're such cool fish, but people dont understand the size and type of work it takes to keep these suckers. not to mention little things like frontin the food bill ha

IMO they are still best left in the wild but i own one RTC and one RTC hybrid but i also own a pond so i hope they'll be happy there in due time. lol!

I think the point here is it's not about what is nessicary, but what the right thing to do is. Yes, you can keep an RTC in a 180, and you can also keep a great dane in your bathroom. Will they both fit? yes, will they be happy, healthy and live their full life? NO!

Plus you will also have a ton of SH*T piled up in that bathroom. You ever see a great dane take a crap? LOL

they are all right you should do some serious thinking about a pond or a massive renforced tank...they all forgot to metion the power the big cats have...as for the tsn the adult footprint is the same as the rtc...i have 3 tsns now they are 4" as soon as they wont get eatten the will go in my 180gal for at most a yr or so then a 10'x5'x3' tank i will be building i problibly end up with it like 8' wide but i'll see...if you want a big cat thats the kinda plan you need to have or have the pond aready witch is what everyone will tell you or has told you...

ok i got the answer a few post down, then i asked another question and nobody even regarded answering my question. i wasn't going to get an RTC anyway. i was doing research for a future idea. i want a different catfish other then my ocelifer but until i get a large enough tank i am stuck asking questions. if you are going to keep yelling at me after i clearly new that it was inevitable to own an RTC in my current conditions. now i am asking nicely with no hope that i get lectured or yelled at about the topic that once i again i am trying to change. what kind of catfish can i get that will house well in a 55 gallon tank that won't get me in trouble? i thought since there were many people with RTC's in their fish tanks that hmm maybe it is possible to keep one for a short while in my current set-up. all i needed to know was yes or no. again in the topic changer that i posted about 10 posts back. how would a TSN work, or is it the same thing and if so what catfish could i get? i am highly intrigued with catfish and sadly only have one (i have owned more in the past). i am looking for something to liven up a tank from the bottom.

tsn's are just like rtc's in terms of care so it wouldnt work for a 55. how about like a raphael or whiptail? or even an upside down.

well i have a syno but he's going with the oscar and pacu. i am looking for something that looks cool, gets a decent size (not too big), and has lots of character.

Gulper catfish seem to fit your description. These things get no bigger then 12" and can live in a 55 gallon for most of its life. I wouldnt recommend mixing this fish though, thats the only problem.

oh, i have a few small fish that grow to a big size. i have a lemon oscar 4", a jack dempsey 1.5", and a green terror 1.5"
