RTC swallowed my umbee...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow you'd figure you'd learn after the first time...

That was a small round little puffer...not an Umbee of similar size. At least the Umbee was not poisonous... And wow, Drstrangelove, such a little detective, ha ha. Thanks for pointing out my previous loss...I guess. Why are you trying to stir the pot?

So how is that shovelnose cat doing by the way?

The Shovelnose cat is doing well. Thanks. Haven't had anymore problems with him. But I'm still looking for somewhere to relocate both my rtc and snc. I live in LA, so there aren't a shortage of LFS I could take them to. HOWEVER, 99.9% chance that they turn around and sell it to some kid with a 20 gallon and 15-20 Red Devils as tank mates, lol. So, working on a private adoption for now. Any qualified adopters in Los Angeles will be considered. Preferably a pond, heated and indoor would be stellar. Oh and AshKetchum, my RTC ate my one eyed hydro gar last week, along with a Jack Dempsey and Demasoni. The Umbee was just over the top...sucks actually.

Nah. I know that you know to be careful. It's just my way of reminding myself that this is what these pets do in the wild. I honestly feel bad for both the owners and fish that suffer this fate because a lot of times it's a heartfelt loss.

As much as I love some of these cats (there's quite a few I'd like to keep), I'll likely never have one unless it's a solo.

I find it weird that my local Aquarium has 3, 5 foot RTCs in with a bunch of smaller fish like leporinus and amphs. Tank is 28,000 gallons but still I though at night they would just pick them off.

Too small maybe? Some carnivores (crocodiles come to mind) won't chase after food that is too small. They'll wait for one big meal rather than try for 3 small ones.

Not too surprising to me but indeed, IMHO, close to the limits of what RTCs can do. It was not likely but it was still possible.

I trust my cats just fine with tank-mates that cannot be swallowed AND in a large enough enclosure.

Moreover, again IMHO, there is most usually no reason not to trust many cats, like the large Doradiidae, Auchenoglanis (giraffe), IDS, etc., even well-fed Leiarius, IME.

I've had great many losses too and still do and still learn. My most painful one came when my 2.5' TSN killed a freshly-introduced (into a 4000 gal) $300 1.5' Jardini arowana to get which I had to drive 8 h one way.

My rtc was 24" when I have him to my brother n law he was with a 5 inch oscar for a year and half no problems my brother n law put it in with his 10 inch fish and the rtc tried to eat it... Both died
