Red Tail Tiger Shovelnose fish are man made. They have been produced simply for the food trade and quite a few find their way into aquarium trade.Like many hybrid fishes produced like this the deformities in fry are monumental, hence the mortality rate is high.In England you can find many between 12" to 24" on classified fish sales sites.I have seen a few large specimins but none huge begging the question of how many actually make it to maturity-or have they only been available for the last few years and none have got to that stage yet.One fact-hybrids are much more prone to disease and weaknesses.

That's one thing I wondered actually. I've seen red tail cats in person of about 3 foot, and seen photos of enourmous ones obvious - like 5 ft.

But I've never seen a hybrid in person past about 10 inches, and never even seen a photo of one past 20/22 inches. So do they die or do they actually not grow as large as either pedigree?

the hybrid in the first pic was my little guy i got him at three inchs. Little tiny thing he grew to be aprox 9 or ten inchs give or take a couple./ Power failer took him from me along with many other fish. what a sad day that was.,

He wasnt aggressive persay but anything he thought would fit in his mouth did so., Few wild caught texas cichlids a fh and few others. but otherwise he chilled with my tsn and bullhgead cat i had at same time no problems.

mine is pushing 23" right now. He's healthy as can be. I don't see him dying anytime soon. One man on aquaticpredators.com has one nearly 30". I just think that most people get negative reactions about keeping these mut fish, and don't like to talk about them. I love mine. They are calming down after being in their new pond for 3 days now. I will let you know if any of mine get to the 3' - 5' mark. As awesome as this thing looks now I can only imagine it that size. lol. I will keep everyone updated on them. I plan on keeping them till death do us part.

Whilst there are many ethical opinions either way on this issue mankind has manipulated many animals and plants to his own end.Like it or not these fish do exist in the aquarium trade and deserve no less care than any pure breed. As far as I am aware like most hybrids they cannot breed so release into the wild will not upset ecosystems unless large scale.Sadly we have had two, first died at 12",no apparent explanation and the other died at 14" we think due to some kind of a virus introduced to the tank by twice quarantined fish.Like many hybrids variation in individuals can be extreme.

My RTSN is pretty active now that I moved my Jaguar Cichlid to the Big Boy Tank. Hopefully I can put the RTSN in with them when he gets bigger. He's about 2 1/2" to 3" right now. And the Boyz are an 8" Albino Tiger Oscar, 8" Jack Dempsey, and 4" Jaguar Cichlid. So the Oscar and Dempsey can probably do some damage if I were to put the catfish in right now.

here a guy claims the tsn x rtc cross is a sorubimicthys planiceps. He obviously needs glasses. http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Catfish, Shovelnose.htm
dude that f@#kin nut's .. the only way to settal the issue is to take a 6month fishin trip to the amazon and see if there realy is a subspecie of cat that has rtc & tsn DNA . kinda how cichlid's branched off from one another to adapt to differant localtion's . myself I belive it's a hybrid made perposily or not ... beutiful fish though ...............

funny you should say that, I am saving money right now to go to SA to fish for large pims(what the hell small ones too). Hoping to have enough to go sometime in the summer. Who knows maybe I will Catch a hybrid too. lol. Does anyone know what kind of permits you might need to bring fish back dead or alive? I appreciate any help.

I read somewhere that you might have to go to the fish and game office and get some type of permit and they have a list of things that can and cannot be brought back from other countries. I was in Thailand and I was trying to figure out if I could bring back an Asian Arowana. I ran out of time before I could figure out if or how to bring it back. I'm still unsure if they're legal or illegal in the states.
