I am really not sure what that filter is called. I have never seen one like that before. I have a 125g regular community tank (no monster fish in there) and I have two fluval canister filters running on it. A fluval 304 that came with the tank when I bought it from its previous owner, and I added a fluval 405. I prefer canister filters for larger tanks, although I think for a fish such as a RTC that has a high bio load- you might want to consider a wet/dry sump system.

Cute RTC btw- I like the picture.

ok thanks man!any tips or links for a DIY sump system??

Sorry- no. I am not the right person to ask as I do not have any experience with those filtrations systems. There is a great DIY section on the forum though- I am sure you can find some info in there.

You need to start working towards the bigger tank, the volume of water is really important and I think one of the reasons you will see ammonia readings is that there is not enough water to handle the waste produced.

That filter is more like a pond filter and you can add to your filtering easily by adding another chamber on top and allow that to drain in to the one you have.

I am a little worried that if you can only afford 1 test kit then you are going to struggle with the cost of houseing, feeding and filtering for such a demanding fish.

Also, Why is your tank not full to the brim, you need as much water volume as possible.

If you are losing a lot of water to evaporation then you need to reduce this as only pure water evapoates leaving the minerals and the waste behing, this will mess up your water quality over time.

On that side tank I would be doing medium water changes every other day.

Only clean your filter out using tank water too.

water changes are 50% twice a week man.. i dnt fill it up coz the gourami takes breaths of air from the surface also my rt doesn't need much depth only swimming space..water evaporates but only very minute droplets..i started cleaning the filter with aquarium water but before i used our source water which was deepwell and i have read that deepwell water doesn't harm the sensitive good bacteria in the filter but i switched to aquarium water just to be sure..will be posting new pics soon..any other tips man? Thanks BTW!!

oh forgot these pics were old ones..will post new ones soon..now i have added a gg and a pleco..rtc has grown quite a bit

and i thought i was too pushy getting ppl to reply~~~ I can only help u one bit man, the filter you were asking about, its called a top filter. In Asia its really common but I have no idea why its so alien to americans... no offence... and Im from Malaysia dude jus nearby....

oh top filter eh..THANKS MAN!!yeah its like the only filter used here..in the US their filters are all like canisters and sumps etc..so its hard to compare if different types of filters are used..its hard too find their kinds of filters here..
