RTC with Motoro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have any experience with RTC's and rays together but I do have some experience with RTC's in general. I have found that some RTC's will be OK with a wide range of tank mates and other RTC's will basically kill anything in the tank even fish that are bigger than them. Generally they are calm fish but I have seen a couple that were real though guys and they are very powerful even at 12" and you would be surprised at what they can do. I have seen a 12" RTC kill an oscar that was twice it's wight and this fish was feed well and was not starving by any means and it was only these two fish in a 90g tank so not like they were that cramped either.

You may be fine but I personally would not risk it with a ray especially a ray that is smaller as it is likely the RTC is going to grow faster than the ray if feed properly.

I believe Shed aquarium had to take there RTC out of the big tank exhibit in the amazon section because it was beating up on other fish and there are some monsters in that tank. I'm pretty sure it actually killed one of there big rays but don't quote me on that because I can not be to sure of the source I got the info from.

This is my concern as well. It depends on the RTC... who knows, maybe he is territorial on bottom but no where else.

Hey I don't wanna step on your toes.... but your info is wrong... the rule is if they fish can fit into the rtcs mouth it will find it and eat it.... no matter what level of water... and the other problem will be feeding... getting food to your ray before your little freshwater whale gets to it... they CAN be kept together with supervision and experience in fish keeping ... you must watch... what we need to know is the size of the ray..... can he fend for himself... I really wouldn't worry about the rtc eating him as I know how fast my motoros are as I would be about him out eating them and starving them... seriously... but to be on the safe side make sure the ray is atleast 6" in dish size

They won't 100% guaranteed eat it but its a risk 100% guaranteed. His ray is 6" if you didn't read that, but even with a 12" RTC that could end up in ray burrito.

RTC are lazy so if you add in some extra food it won't be an issue. My rays are all over their foods in a matter of minutes, very greedy feeders as well. RTC will gobble something up but then he will take time with it before he moves on to his next piece, IME. Mine are not housed together right now, however, but my rays will be much bigger than the RTC without even mention of them fitting in his mouth as my RTC is just a baby.

Ya, they can be really laid back and calm or they can be big bullies. You can not really say one way or the other if it will work as each fish in different. Considering the size of the 2 fish, if the ray is 6" and the RTC is 12" than I personally think it is risky in general. But that does not mean it will not work, but you are risking your ray to find out and chances are, you will not be there watching if the RTC decides he wants to see what the ray tastes like.

Another thing to keep in mind is the growth rate of an RTC. They can grow really fast. And if you are keeping it well feed so it does not pick on the ray, it will be more than likely growing faster than the ray. I have heard Motoros can grow pretty fast as well but I'm not sure if they will outgrow a RTC.

The Ray will not become a bonito... ya they're lazy because they probably aren't competing for food from other bottom dwellers add a ray and you got one anxious catfish... ya.my rays eat quick too but they don't have to worry about other fish being in their way... a n rtc would spook mine... from experience ... its a good combo like I said but you have to watch... but the whole ray burrito is still kinda funny if you think of it as a cartoon..

its my ray ...
its 6" and pretty slow growing ... maybe 1-2" in 3-4 months

and its pretty good when it comes to food. within 20 seconds of food hitting the bottom, the ray is on top of it

ok ok the thing is that a 6" Ray doesnt have alot of mass like... per say an 10" Ray its only 4" bigger but more like 4 times the amount of mass so id say NO to the small 6" Pup Ray as for the reason the RTC wil be 15" in a matter of a month or two and by then that 6" ray will disappear one day, i have also have a RTC along with lots of other cats from 9" to 27" so ive seen what these Cats can do to other fish!!!! but if you get a bit larger ray and that will give you peace of mind! best of luck my friend
