If you're trying to raise pH and KH, try reading here:

The salt alone won't do it. This mix combines marine salt mix, epsom salt, and baking soda to slowly raise pH and keep it there, due to also raising KH. This article explains the basics on pH and KH as well, and you really need to learn what you're doing and why you're doing it, instead of taking advice from five different people, none of whom care for your fish as much as you do. I'm not saying their advice is bad, but they're never going to be as invested in your fish as you, because the fish aren't theirs. Just take some time and understand what's going on and what you need to be doing to treat.

And your pH may be too low. But the problems you presented with originally were due to the toxic ammonia levels present in your tank.

Thanks for your link, it explains alot in great detail

On the afternoon of 10-18 I spoke to another friend who has been raising tanks for 25 yrs and he told me my PH was too low and that what the LFS told me to do was the right thing to do.

Your friend is completely wrong. Natural Ph for those fish is around 6. In fact, the only thing saving your fish from death is the low ph (it makes the ammonia mush less toxic). Carbon has no effect on tank cycling or your bio-filter.

Your fish are sick because your water quality is terrible. You need to figure out how you uncyled your filters (washing in tap water maybe?).

maybe... well, it seems like his problem cleared up...
