RTC

my heater broke last night without my knowledge. Woke up this morning to find the water at 52 F. No deaths. my rtc was just fine just wouldn't move, every other day he is quite active
 
Yea...will definitely slow down the metabolism. Something to be avoided. I wasnt condoning cold water RTC...only saying that they weren't foreign to room temp h2o most likely.

Stability is key in most aquaria.
 
Hey guys...just wanted to bump this thread saying that it finally happened, and that I now have an RTCXTSN hybrid. Hoping this guy will stay a little smaller/grow a little slower than your standard RTC.

Either way...Im not giving this fish up for anything. Thanks for the help.
 
I would love to see pics:) of the fish and the 15x15x4 with the waterfall. My hybrid grew faster than my RTC but it sounds like he has a good setup to grow into any way.
 
He isnt, and wont be in that pond for a long time. There is a lot of bureaucracy biz that I will have to get through. Pool might even end up deeper than that though.

Ill try to get some pics...dont have the best camera.
 
I wouldn't worry too much of puking for a few reasons. If you plan on him being the only resident you wont "accidentally overfeed" trying to get food to other fish. Use your brain I'm sure you know how much a fish should eat, just double it cuz they are bottomless pits when food is around.
 
AlSo who is the dud who has a rtc and largemouth bass? I wouldn't encourage you to keep any fish, never mind get more, but why wouldn't you just get peacock bass who are native to the same area as rtc, and therefore do well in warm water. Just saying, it would be cool to have walleye in my tropical killer tank but I wouldn't unplug my heater to try to make it work
 
And sorry to rant, but my RTCxTSN hybrid is almost 23" and he was 1.5" when i got him Xmas last year, they do grow quick, but gorgeous fish, if you get bored check mine out
 
I am not suggesting that the hybrids dont grow fast. I am just hoping that it will be slower/to a smaller size than the regular RTC.

As I have said before in this post, most amazonian fish can go below 70F without any negative consequences to metabolism or growth.

I am not condoning the other posters actions, just saying that temperature wise...it can work out.
 
Took the little guy out today and measured him....11.9cm from tip of snout to tip of pinched tail...will be measuring every other week.
