hi, i have a 10 gallon tank (getting bigger one soon) with 6 jack dempseys and these days ive noticed that they seem to "rub against a log that i have. It is a porcelian log with holes. And any time one jd comes along, it would rush past and "rub" against it. Also, sometimes they "shiver". Is this some sickness or something? thnx.

sounds like parasites and you might need some copper :) could be wrong but if they look at all like they have an itch, id go get some copper and treat the tank.

There are several diseases that can cause those symtoms, ich (like grains of salt), velvet (soft looking rusty spots), or costia (glistening spots of jellylike slime).

I dont know, they look fine to me. no spots, no damages nothing. and also, now they keep laying on the ground!:( not onto their sides like they are dead but as if they are sleeping! :nilly: :nilly: :nilly: argh!

what is copper? it just looks like they keep scratching themselves to everything! the gravel, the log, and sometimes the plants! :irked:

If copper can help i will try it. thnx. what is copper?

Its a liquid that you put in your tank, My fish do this every now and then and end up cutting there selves but I do 40% w/c every week and add about a spoon full of salt. my water is at 83* so i dont think its ich but it might help to add some copper. They look fine though so some fish might just do it as if they are playing idk.

thats exactly what my male jag did
and then i noticed my female had ich so i treated the whole tank and now they are both happy

I cant see anything wrong with my fish either, but I havent seen them do it in a good amount of time so idk.

omg! now they look like they are sleeping but sometimes fall on their sides! argh. i just hope they dont die. what does salt do? is it supposed to keep fish healthy? and if i do use salt, how much should i use for a 10 gallon tank?

ive checked everything. i think. my temps is usually around 75, the ph is perfectly 7.0 and i do water changes at least once every other day. ( how many times are u supposed to do water changes?) They look perfectly fine! I see no spots, no fin troubles or nothing.

ALso, i have one pleco that i have. its still small but it hides in the log all day just keeping out the other fish.

what kinda filter do you have and did you cycle the tank before adding 7 fish
just asking not trying to smack you around
whats your nitrates and nitrites at?
mike
