that is most likely your problem and don't feel bad everyone has to learn somehow and i am sure you are not the only one.
i did the same thing years ago i swear.
now what is happening is your tank is going through a cycle
stop doing water changes and buy your self some way to test your water
the easiest for a newbie is test strips
do you have any freinds with a fish tank that has been stup for awile if so steal some sludge out of his filter or one of his sponges or something anything that will have bacteria on it this will help your tank cycle faster
make sure when you steal something that you keep it wet till you get it in your tank
hope this helps
any other questions ask away
your fish may make it may not but you need to act fast
Oh i see. Umm test strips? i have no idea what those are. Can you lead me to a site to show me what they look like? and what do they check for?
Also, how can i get rid of this nitrate and nitrite?
I have a friend who has a 30 gallon tank. but hes a jerk and tells me to just leave the filter. he keeps in an arowana, 2 dempseys, and a big pleco ( i think it is ). he tells me he just water changes once a mnth and doesnt do much.
He is probably lieing. He says he has a fish that eats up the crap. but i dont believe him.... thats why im asking here on MFK.
milkman i think your fish have something but not sure what
i myself would raise the temp of your tank to about 86 and add salt
2 teaspoons per gallon of water. add some airstones or a powerhead to increase oxygen in the tank
do this for ten days with no waterchanges
Okie dokie dock. I'm gona fill my tank up ( was doing a w/c ) than I'll go out and buy power head, * cant raise the tank up any higher its to cold outside and it gets in through my window and brings the tank down 4*)
here is what the test strips are they sell them at walmart http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=4494&N=2004+113074
heres what you want to do
get the ammonia strips test untill you see 0 ammonia
then get the 5-1 strips and watch your nitrites once the are 0 all that is left is nitrates
the only way to get rid off nitrates is to do a waterchange
so now your tank is cycled now you can start doing water changes again
do not do a water change untill you have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites
