I'm just going to assume you don't post in the ray forum often.

That's a fine assumption and in fact true. Though I'm not sure why you'd expect anyone who doesn't know you to take the words "what is ammonia?" as anything but a face value question.

The pH is absolutely fine. I have no idea why anyone that's keeping freshwater rays would ever aim for a pH in that range. If his pH was 7.6 and he had ammonia in the system his ray would be worse off than if the pH was 6.8

I am still new to rays. A couple named Matt and Ashley (username ashleysomething) spent some time at my house when I bought some of their stock, and when they were teaching me about rays they mentioned that the pH range I mentioned here (around 7.6) was perfect. I took their words for truth since they seemed like masters of their trade (rays). If I was misinformed, then I'm glad to have been crorrected.

In hindsight I probably should not be giving advice to someone whose ray might be dying, but I am successfully keeping rays myself and still consider my two mentors the most dedicated ray keepers I know. Anyways, good luck to the OP and thanks for clearing that up Pete.

Rays can handle a pretty wide pH range. But anything in the neutral range is good.

he did have a good point that the lower the pH, the less toxic any ammonia spike is likely to be.

Hopefully it was just from the ammonia spike and he'll recover. I had two rays die suddenly and unexpectedly for absolutely no reason. I tested my params, and everything was normal other than high nitrates from the rays dying.

your PH is fine.. anything from 6-8 is fine as long as it steady.. start doing daily water changes... How thick of a layer of sand do you have in that tank? probely need to give that a good stir as well. If this is your first ray, i would have started with a bare bottom tank to keep things easier.

The ray still has a chance. But she is pretty thin.

Agreed. You should be feeding earthworms as a staple, since the krill and ghost shrimp aren't the most nutritious foods. They're ok as secondary foods, but you really need to get her on a higher protein diet to fatten her up.

it doesnt look like death curl . looks like its raising the back edges of the disk . possibly due to a large change in ph recently .

how much water do you change at a time ?

on the vid there is a shadow between the rays eyes. is that a large dent / cavity ?

if i were you i would get some earthworms / nightcrawlers . chop them up a bit and feed it . if its eating its most likley ok and it will get a good feed as well .

keep us posted and dont be tempted to change loads of water in one go because you think there is something wrong. you might do more harm than good with the changes

as far as your ammo test. if u have 0 ammo u can leave the water in the test tube for hours and it will stay yellow. i would keep up on the water changes until it is 0.

what filtration do u have?
what is ph of well water?

im a huge fan of feeding blackworms. they can be a little pricey but they are very healthy for your fish. will fatten them up fast.

How she Ust to look
