Last night my female motoro died, and what's worse is that I can't figure out why. I have a 500 gallon indoor pond, 75 gallon dyi filter (pond has been up and running now for almost a year) My ph is about 7.6ish, ammonia is 0, nitrite is 0, nitrate is in between 10-15ppm (using a api kit) And the temp in the pond is 83. Those numbers with the ammonia/nitrite/ph/temperature have been consistant-I don't really check nitrate that often and just noticed that its not where it should be-but is that the reason for death? Just in case, I did a decent water change, and added some prime. There are two other rays in the pond.
What do you guys think? There were no marks on her, her belly looked fine, no real reason for the death in my opinion. She ate the day before, looked normal and happy and now this.
Uhh, I was trying to figure this out and can't. :(

realy sorry to hear about your ray mate i totaly know what you mean ive had fish die and i couldnt see any reason for it but when you think about it theirs a very large number of things that can cause fish death and many are un tracable nitrate mmm!! maybe as rays can be sensative but you nusualy have sighns like non feeding and strange amounts of aggression

What was the nitrate when it did not seem right, if they are used to 15ppm and you had top of the scale it could easily have been in the hundreds.

In my opinion nitrate is directly or indirectly to blame for many more fish deaths than the hobby realizes, it can cause long term decline of immune system and it can increase in a Ray tank from 10ppm to 100ppm in a week, I monitor mine at least twice per week and i run a deltec reactor so I know It is fairly stable but if the rays have been eating a lot it still causes problems despite 2 decent water changes leer week.

Never trust your supply water as nitrate can be off the scale coming out the tap, despite this being illegal, I know of one supply near me that is over 100ppm out the tap and that is over twice the legal limit.

My supply is virtually nil.

I am not saying this is the reason but if unexplained and you have noticed a change then this could be it.

thank you guys for your knowledge and support.
toby, I believe that it has been 15 ppm perhaps for a while until I noticed it-do you think that is bad?
dodgers-thanks man, I'm gonna change it up a bit, i used to feed tilapia, earthworms and shrimp...but for the past 5 months, i've been feeding shrimp only

sorry about the loss man. D:

I have been told that rays have a sudden death syndrome. Which is a very expensive gamble.
