I have an acrylic tank with a RTC with an algae problem. Softmouth suckerfish and bushynose plecos will get eaten so I am thinking of something like a large sailfin pleco.

Has anyone kept sailfin plecos in acrylic safely? I am wondering if they scratch up acrylic tanks?

i have two in mine....works good. but I'm not to sure about the RTC.

You'll just have to cross your fingers it will eat the algae. Some will, some won't... usually depends on how well they're fed. Bigger ones won't eat it as much either. Chances are you'll just be adding a large bioload into your tank.

Anythoughts towards them damaging the acrylic? I once heard that they can eventually chew through acrylic and fiberglass/wood tanks, providing they are large enough.

Someone once warned me about putting them infiberglass/plywood tanks saying that they would eat through the resin and cause the tank to leak. What is the feasability of this happening?

I would think the resins and formaldehyde used to make the plywood would leach and cause probs. before the fish had a chance to rasp alll the way through.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much about the resins. If you use the right fiberglass resin, it should be not toxic once dried. As long as the plywood is covered by fiberglass, you should have to worry about it leeching into the tank

The reason I am asking is I am eventually going to grow out a monster pleco, and I would like to put it in my DIY 300+ gallon tank when I finish it. I just worry now after someone told me they could eventually eat through it.

I've heard of a Cat eating you out of a house and home, but a Pleco literally doing it, thats awesome.
