Sajica and Odessa Barbs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Adhlc Adhlc Excellent, thanks for the input. I believe it to be male because I do not see much yellow, however I will post a photo tomorrow, it's currently lights out. Do you think I would be pushing it with a 3" Red Jewel that is in the same 125 with the Sajica? I can add both at the same time and keep a close eye or do you think it's destined to fail? Thanks again

No problem man. It's hard to predict whether they'll get along in the 40 as well as they do in the 125. I personally liked the idea of having the Sajica as a centerpiece. However, if you wanted to try and keep them both in there without any issues, it's certainly worth a try. Especially considering you could just throw the jewel back in the 125 if it didn't work.

Adhlc Adhlc that's very true, one thing I forgot to mention was that the jewel was in the 40b at one point with 6 zebra danios and now I have no zebra danios. Do you think the Barbs will be murdered simply because it's done it before. Either way, I could always try and if I notice a barb missing or dead, I know exactly who the culprit is. Thanks again

Odessa barbs are a lot tougher than Zebra Danios, but if you know for a fact that you have a particularly nasty Jewel, I'd say heir on the side of caution and keep it in the 125.

Thank you for the replies. @nwcichlidkeith I'm going to give it a shot, do you think I'm pushing my luck if I add my sajica and red jewel cichlid? Or should I just go with the sajica? Thanks again
You might be pushing your luck - I've found jewel Cichlids to be way more aggressive - if a pair, they would wipe everything out

I've kept sajicas in 40b (about to start a breeding project as soon as my new batch develops a pair in a 40b) before with no issue. Unless you have a jerk of a sajica i seriously doubt you'll have any issues with the schooling fish and smaller fish.

I do agree with the others though that putting a different species of cichlid in a 40b with a sajica is probably not a smart idea.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I did add the sajica this morning to the 40 and the Barbs chased it for a bit, but shortly after I had a gang of Fonzie's on my hands. I decided against adding the Jewel or anything else to this tank for that matter. I love the combo of the sajica and Odessa barbs. I snapped a few photos, I apologize in advance for the terrible photos, looks like I'm going to have to invest in a proper camera next.

Just a quick update, this seems like the perfect setup. The pleco has been out and about also, with no issues. I was happy to see the sajica basically ignore it because of the pleco's small size. So all in all, I'd say this was a success. In most other instances it would be too early to tell, but I doubt I will be getting any trouble out of anyone in the 40. Thanks again everyone for your help.

I'm planning on keeping a pair of sajicas in a 40 with a few other fish. So I hope your experience turns out to be positive
