Sajica Cichlid -75 Gallon Set Up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I found a preview of that book on Google last night but couldn't find it in print for sale anywhere. I will have to check the library and see; or if they have an English translation available.
The book is in both Spanish, and English .
There is an aquarium book vender, that shows up at a lot of the aquarium society auctions, swap meets and the like named Mike Schadle that may be a source.
I used to see him at many Milwaukee and Chicago aquarium and cichlid association functions.

Could join the American livebearer association and have a look around there.

That's a good idea. I am also searching for rare livebearer groups on Facebook to join for hobbyist breeders.

I will keep my eye out. I was able to access more of the book as a preview on Google books and found the English sections. I also found a research paper that lists different Costa Rican fish which is very helpful.

Knife livebarers (Alfaro cultratus) are found in Costa Rica. They are rare in the hobby, but not impossible to find. Check aquabid.com for any wild type livebarers.

I was able to find Alfaro cultratus for sale. I will keep them in mind as they have the look I am aiming for.

In general, how many livebearers would be recommended? Sajica are scheduled to ship tomorrow for Thursday delivery.

I'd start with 6 or more. Alfaro also occur more north in the herotilapia range, but they will work. Most of the fancy Costa rican livebearers mostly occur either along the Atlantic coast, or in the San juan river drainage, except for brachyrhaphis, which will also actively hunt fry. They're really cool fish, but basically just giant gambusia behavior wise.

I figure at least a handful of fry will survive as the breed, so six sounds like a good starting number. I'm looking forward to the Sajica to ship tomorrow. I will eventually be rescaping the tank- adding river rock and some more wood pieces to try and replicate a stream environment.

Oh I mean they'll eat cichlid fry. They probably won't spawn in the cichlid tanks.

Sajica arrived today. Was getting nervous for delivery- UPS Next Day Air but they didn’t deliver until close to 2:30, and it’s 30 degrees out. Thankfully fish made it okay. They were shipped well with two heat packs. These guys aren’t shy in the least. Eating already and coming right up to the glass.

They have been on my wishlist for several years, I was so glad to find them. I’ve actually never seen them in person-their eyes are even more impressive than the pictures.

They are eating like pigs already. Tried several pellets and some frozen brine shrimp.
