Sajica Cichlid -75 Gallon Set Up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are doing very well. Still have all six together and they are growing quickly. Haven’t seen any pairing off yet. Hard to get a defent photo as they are always on the move. Also can’t sex them just yet, but that could be failure on my part. All exhibit the red and yellow on the dorsal. Could it be too soon to sex or do I have a single sex group?

Would love to see pictures of your growouts. I’ll try to get better pictures of mine this week.

Glad to hear they are doing well.

I had just figured out I wanted to do these as my next project in my 65B and then Wet Spot had sold out. Thankfully one of my local fish stores had ordered some so I was able to get a few (4). Right now its a bit of a rough situation because they are sharing the tank with a growout pearsei that they are terrified of due to his sheer size, lol. But the big vegetarian does not really pay any attention to them so they are totally safe. Im just waiting for the pearsei to get big enough to put in my 300 gallon where he wont get ate by the 20" endli bichir! So until then the sajica are sharing the 65B. My goal is just a solo male in the tank with maybe some mollies. I am planning on a full aquascape change out too with my dark gravel going and a lighter substrate replacing it. Right now due to the dark gravel the fish show really dark like they are stressed looking.

I will see if I can get some pics to share with you too.

What do you mean by red and yellow? Males will have more of a transparent red, females will have more of a solid yellow. This shows up at around an inch, but can show up later in certain individuals
They pretty much all start out with some weird reds

A 300 gallon tank sounds amazing. How long have you had your Sajica? Have you been able to sex any yet? Looking forward to pictures

The top of the dorsal fin is red with more yellow underneath fading into the body. I tried to get some pictures. Some are blurry due to them moving around but you can see the color.

Very nice to see the yellows on the body coming in, mine are always black. I think they may be too cold. I notice sajica does not tolerate low temperatures well at all. I see what you mean by weird mix of yellow and red now. Seeing the red on the tails as well, I am inclined to say you got unlucky and got all males, but statistically this is probably not the case and you may just have to wait a bit more.

What temperature do you keep yours at? Mine are at 78, but I was contemplating slowly dropping down to 77. Getting all males would be my luck though- especially since I was considering starting with a group of eight.

I keep my CA tanks at 75 over fall and winter. In the spring I turn off the heater and let the tanks ebb and flow with the air temps in a non air conditioner house. So at night the tank naturally cools down to the mid to high 70s. Highest temps I got on 110°F days was 86ish.

Do you think the 75 is too cold for them then? I'm pretty happy with my 78 but may gradually decrease to 77.
