Sajica Cichlid -75 Gallon Set Up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been a little while since an update. My Sajica are starting to grow very quickly. Unfortunately I can only count five in the tank, and the one is hiding and does not appear to be doing well. I didn't notice any aggression toward that fish, but I am wondering if the larger ones are starting to pick on it. I think the larger ones are all males, but I am not sure. I will try to get some more pictures. Strangely enough the small one I thought was the female. I may have to move her to a different tank.

Appreciate the update. I am down to 5 out of the 6 I had. But that was expected since the last one I bought was just a bit 'off', mouth structure seemed small and it was pretty beat on. The store highly discounted that one so I took it to see if it was something serious or something that would heal/grow out. Apparently it was something serious enough that it passed.

I got an email notification Wet Spot got more in stock. Tempted to order a couple more... Im not sure if I want to raise out a pair and at least raise out a batch of fry or two or just go for the solo male in the 65B and maybe another to put into the 300.

I’m a fan of the idea of a solo male in the 65B and another male to put in the 300. Sounds solid.

IME they'll pick each other off.. I'm on my 2nd go round with them. Had a group of 6 juvies.. as they grew, the dominant pair bred multiple times in a 75 species and dither tank and 240 community tank w/ larger cichlids.. Then 1 by 1 I was down to 3, (2 males 1 female).. no other losses and water parameters all checked.. Then I was down to 2 males.. This is over about 10+ months.. I recently bought 4 more similar sized females and see spawning behavior from 2 pairs in a 240 w/ larger A. lyonsi.. but the other 2 females now have nipped fins after arriving in perfect condition. setting up a 20 long this weekend for fry grow-outs..

good luck with your group hope you have or can get some females.. they're spawning colors are awesome..

P platy21 , well Im not sure about yours but one of mine wants to breed. It took over an empty pleco cave, has had tube dropped and chasing everything away. No others have stepped up to spawn.... yet

As I mentioned on page 1 of this thread, a 75 gal is really only large enough for 1 pair of adult sajica.
The interspecies culling (as expected) has already begun.
The fish will ultimately decide the tanks stocking, it does not matter what you think "should" work.
You may be able to get away with some noncichlid dithers, if they are fast enough, but probably no other cichlids, or anything the sajica can corner in that limited amount of space

Still have the five but I am still not sure the sex; I want to say they are males save for the one that is the "odd man out". That one I think may be female, but I am not sure. I've been observing the tank for a few days to make sure the aggression toward the one warrants removing to my 90 gallon. I will make the transfer this week.

Mine haven't shown any signs of pairing or breeding and I'm wondering if that is because they are all males. Which would be unfortunate. I also have a few empty 20 gallon longs and a 37 gallon (?) I think column tank I can use for emergency separation if needed as the dominate fish establishes itself/themselves.

P platy21 , updates on yours?

My female has for a second time went into breeding mode, tube dropped and laid eggs, she paired with one of the smaller males. With the awkwardness of the pleco tube she was using I did not get any fry from the pairing. I went and picked up two 4" clay pots to set up and see if she can pull off a batch. I do have one larger noticeable male that has been paying attention to her now, which is the one I would like to breed with her because he had a great little blocky mini-midas look about him already. Looking at how small they are you really wouldn't think they should be breeding but Im thinking these are going to be quite prolific once I get a bit more ideal layout for them.

That’s great yours are trying to breed. Are they still all getting along, for the most part?

I haven’t noticed any breeding or further pairing behavior with mine. I thought I lost one but am back to counting all six. One is still much smaller but he’s been recovering nicely. If I am sexing mine correctly I have at least three males, potentially four. Interestingly the largest and most dominate fish is a female, but there is a male not far behind in size. The three most likely to be males have the red fins and the two most likely females have all yellow. The third has a touch of red in the fins so I am leaning toward male.
