I believe Hellbenders live almost exclusively under water never venturing out of it. several species are found in the United States.

Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus) and Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) are known for sure never to leave water, but even maybe a dozen zoos worldwide has any exhibits

I remember there was an experiment done that they kept salamanders from egg stage to adult hood without giving land for them to shed there gills they lived fine and healthy for a year until they where done with the experiment and finally gave them land to shed there gills. Might want to do this? Any opinions on this? Not sure if it affects the animal.

That's interesting. I didn't know you could do that. I'll have to look into that. Do you by chance remember who did the experiment?

Something that also wasn't mentioned here is African Clawed Frogs. These guys get to be about 5-6" are very interesting to watch. Absolutely no land requirements, but if you fill the tank, you'll need a lid, I've had one escape before and it didn't end well. a small group of 3-4 would be quite comfortable in a 50-55.

I'm currently growing out a pair of males. Just watch out and be sure to avoid the "Candy" frogs, they were subjected to being dipped in a mild acid to remove their slime coat, having ink tattoed into their skin, and then with their injuries being fresh, dipped in salt water to stimulate their slime coat to grow back. I didn't figure that out with mine till I brought them home. :(

That's awful! Why would someone do that?! It amazes me that we don't do enough harm to each other every day...We need to bring these guys in on it too? wow.....I can't believe something like that wouldn't kill the poor guy!
