So, I've been sick for a little over a week to the point where eating, working, doing anything isn't really in my plans..

Well, after a week of being sick, I found out it's salmonella, and I don't have a "bad" case, so I have to let it's run it's course.. And apparently it's contagious, and now the fiance has it.. Ugh!!!

At first, I thought I got it from my turtles, but I don't handle them, and I don't ever really mess with their tank.

But, I always have my hands in the ray tank, and the koi tank. And I normally don't really think to wash my hands right away.

So, for everyone out there.. wash your hands!!

Salmonella is horrible, and having to cope with it just sucks.

i'm def no expert but i would've never guessed you could get salmonella from a fish tank. my guess would've been from food

I agree. I think if it would've come from something in your house, you'd have had it a long time ago.

Salmonella is more likely from reptiles after improper handwashing or poultry then aquariums I know because I happen to be a medical doctor, having said that mycobacterium known as Fishtank granuloma is a nasty disease you could contract from poorly maointained tanks.

Not necessarily. I don't have to mouth siphon any of my tanks downstairs because I have a python, but upstairs I have to mouth syphon my 240, which has not even been up for a month.

There hasn't been any studies to show if fish can get salmonella, but they can carry it- and the 240 has just been stocked with new fish- and it was stocked a few days before I became sick.

I thought too that I would have gotten it from food, but my doctor explained to me that the chances are higher from the fish tanks because I have so many.

Aquarium granuloma (also known as "Fish tank granuloma,"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarium_granuloma#cite_note-Andrews-0and "Swimming pool granuloma"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarium_granuloma#cite_note-Andrews-0) is a skin condition caused by Mycobacterium marinum, characterized by a skin lesion that presents roughly three weeks after exposure.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarium_granuloma#cite_note-Andrews-0

;)

I'm sure you got it from the turtles....they are notorious for having that.

I ALWAYS wash my hands after doing anything from my turtles because of the risk.. And like I said, I haven't messed with their tank in quite some time.
