Salmon tail catfish with Americans?? Will it hurt them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey guys just got a salmon tailed catfish and it's with my Americans. Will this work long term? Bit worried as a mate told me there barbs are like a bee sting? Will they hurt my Americans?

Tank is 4x2x2 upgrading to 6x2x2 tomoz if it arrives hopefully.

I have a
green terror 3.5 inch
Texas 4 inch
Fenestratus 3 inch
2 festae 2.5 inch
2 Jack dempseys 1x 5 inch 1x2.5in
Synspilum 3inch
3 clown loaches
1 syn catfish haha not sure how to spell it
1 red claw crayfish
2 silver dollars
1 salmon tail catfish 5 to 6 inch

Do you think a 6x2x2 will suffice for another year or so.

I would stay away from having two of the same type of cichlid, if they breed you will have major aggression problems. I would also keep an eye on the Festae as they are much more aggressive than your Texas or GT. With that said the JD, GT, and Texas will max out between 8-12 inches. However, if your Festae is male he can get from 14-16 inches and Quetzals get from 12-16. I would get rid of the crayfish as it will probably become food.

As far as your Silver Dollars you should have them in a school of 4, they grow faster and do better in schools. I can't answer your question on Salmon Catfish since I have never had one. With that said you should be okay with a 125 gallon for awhile, however if it were me I would upgrade to a 240 gallon that is more than enough room. Remember to keep an eye on your Festae for aggression problem though.

LOL 1,000 gallons!
Every opportunity you get, you like to make snide remarks at my posts.
I have yet to see you add anything of any value to this forum.
Why don't you just piss off and get a life you idiot.

1000 gallons is not unreasonable for a gang of cichlids and a catfish capable of 32 inches.

Not that amigo, but come on 1000 gallons for fish that will max out at 12-16 inches, LOL. BTW let me repeat that I know nothing about a Salmon Catfish. However, if it does get 32 inches then he needs to rehome it, as it will eat his other fish.

As far as having a 1000 gallon tank for the other fish is just ridiculous, unless someone has that kind of money, but come on bro 1000 gallons?

BTW, go back and read my post I do try to help people (go back and read what I posted to the OP on this thread). The problem I have with you is that you think some of these fish need a swimming pool in order to own that is just not fact. I understand the bigger the tank the happier the fish, but you can be unrealistic at times.

My reply was to all the cichlids and the catfish which depending on species grow to just under 3 feet. I don't think 1000 gallons is over the top even if you do.

Then you should have told the OP to rehome the catfish, usually a fish that large (especially a catfish) will more than likely eat all of his fish.

I know they are big and active.i know all those cichlids are territorial and grow somewhere around 12 inches.

I don't need to own a red tail catfish to know it needs a huge tank.

And I don't need to meet you to know your a sad idiot.

Go troll somebody else your boring me.

We all disagree on tank size and stocking, get over it.

Not trolling just saying that 1000 gallons for cichlids and some silver dollars is ridiculous. BTW, since you brought up RTC. I have owned RTC, TSN, and other large catfish. I kept them in a pond, I believe a tank is stressful for catfish that large.

@OP if your Salmon Catfish gets that big just rehome it.

BTW, not trying to troll but you are making people believe that they need swimming pools to keep cichlids, I am also basing my opinion on other threads you have posted in. Telling someone they need a 240 gallon to keep one Oscar, or that an Oscar gets two feet is just not fact, sorry if I made you pop a blood vessel :)

I never advised the 1000 gallon tank for anything but the catfish and cichlids together.
Find the post where I said oscars get to 2 feet.
I said they can reach 17 inches.
Christ, how many times must I repeat this?
