Ok so I've heard the benefits of using salt for fish, although haven't heard much on salt for rbp, I picked up a big box of api aquarium salt, anyone who has Piranha uses salt? How much? And do you replace it every wc?

Thanks a lot

It couldn't hurt since there is salt in their natural environments from the soil an such. It's main purpose would be as a mineral and to replenish electrolytes in the water. When you change the water you would just add the dosage of salt for gallons removed/added since salt does not evaporate.

Piranha are in the tetra family so use half the recommended dose suggested on the box - yes salt can help w/ homeostasis, however large volume w/c's with tapwater can also replenish dissolved sodium. The downside is losing the ability to use saltinity as a medication for parasites like Ich.

You are better off not adding salt. Salt, while great for parasite infections, has no real application other than that. There are those that swear by it while others swear at it. Anecdotal proof of benefit is not true proof. The claim that it enhances slime coat fails to point out that increased slime coat production is a result of an irritant and not from any other reason. Salt is an irritant. Do not use unless needed.

i only use it around the time of treatments. used it for the red bellies, my rhom has never been exposed to it in my tank atleast

Hmm interesting, I just thought maybe it would repair their fins and perhaps help color, but it seems like they really wouldn't benefit......does anyone currently use salt with their Piranha?

Thanks for all the replies!

Nope - the only time I've ever used salt with P's and it's been a very very long time is when Ick was present. The free floating parasite babies can't adjust to fluxuations in salinity and die - Current stock - 7 yr old 13-14" Caribe and a 2.5 - 3 yr old 10" Rhom - I think large volume dechlorinated w/c's is all they need.

well I out 4tablespoons in to help with their fins, so that's half of a half dose, 3 days later it seems to be helping, not much tho. Their behavior has mellowed out a tad.

I have used API salt with every water change for my P's for at least 5 years. It definitely hasn't hurt but I don't know how much it helps either. What I can tell you is this...when one gets a part of his tail eaten or a chunk of his back eaten, it heals pretty fast. I don't know if that's normal or if that's the salt.
