Salt and piranhas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea its been a few weeks since I started, I only use 4 tablespoons for 90 gals but it seems to help a tad, not to mention it got rid of some nats that were on the rim of my tank for a few months, also I've noticed the fins get healed faster. I like it.

Ok guys, my pygos been occasionally scratching their bodies off the sand. I might see one or two doing that possibly once a day give or take now which I never seen before. Should I act in advance and add some salt? What kind of salt btw? Can I add regular table sea salt or do I need to purchase those special tank salts like the API or other brand ones? I know for sure that it is not serious but I do want to act in advance before problems do occur. Also I will be doing a wc on the weekend.. just too busy right now especially because the semester started today. thanks in advance guys!

I use api but anything beside table salt works as long as its fragrance free and all. What ur describing sounds like flashing, they do it for territorial reasons or just cause they have an itch. If they do it a lot then it may be bad. But usually its nothing to worry about.

That will help, just remember the salt doesn't evap, so next time u do a 50% wc only add 50% more salt since u just took out 50%, if u keep full dosing with wc u will eventually expose the Piranha to high levels of salt and they'll die.

I fill a cup of hot water and mix the salt into it till its disolved then I slowly pour into tank, only during wc.

Ok I see a few of the piranhas scratching more often now. Man should've never fed that dirty koi... I'm going to go get aquarium salt today. Will salt work better than those ick medicines ?

Well I do not see any ick in the tank. I just saw one scratch numerous times now... It may be getting worse while I sit back and think it is nothing. Why not add some saltto improve the living condition no?

Just do a partial water change and see if it persists. Don't waste your time with salt, may do more harm than good.

i just disagree with treating without diagnosing especially if you're not putting in a hospital tank as you would also need to raise the temperature to speed up ich's lifecycle and that could be costly with 11 piranhas

honestly, all my years here, i've never actually seen a pic of a single piranha with ich. if it weren't for pfury, i'd think it were an old wive's tale. i'mma go check out opef to see if it has any info on it
