salt water or fresh

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow they seem like beatiful fish but i dont think theyll be good for me to start with....idk i think im just gonna look around more u kno anymore good fish??

Yeah, puffers are not exactly "begginner fish".

Well honestly a GSP is not rocket science. As long as you can add salt to water, do regular water changes and can handle putting chunks of frozen food in warm water before feeding you can take care of a GSP puffer. Occasional feedings of snails (the only mildly tricky part) which can usually be acquired for free from you LFS and your done. They are really micro monsters. I cannot wait until mine gets to be bigger!

You don't just "add salt to the water". It must be marine salt & should be measured wiith a hydrometer. The salinity should be raised close to marine as an adult & it is actually recommended to get it up to marine, so a protein skimmer & live rock/sand can be used for better filtration & less water changes.

Snails are not always easily available & there are many more crunchy foods available at the fish dept of your local grocery, to keep their teeth trimmed.

if you want make a saltwater tank, better make it bigger then 50gal or soft coal only (which at least 20gal), however, skimmer($200 better not get cheap one for coal), 1gallon : 5W for lightng(right now it has T6, usually 20gallon is 24" which about 144 with light ball price) and a fliter... so you should think careful if want salt water

SW is definately not the cheap end of this hobby!

So when you pick up the marine salt and you have a tank of freshwater...what do you do? Oh yea you add salt to water. Weird

Its really not hard at all. Maybe im just a miracle of common sense but I found it very easy to turn freshwater into salt water (brackish salt water). Although yes you are right it does require some mental consciousness; I figured since the guy can use a computer and make a thread Ill gave him the benifit of the dought.

No, you premix the salt into your changing water. Only raise the SG .002/weekly water change or you will damage the biological filtration in your tank. (There is a little math involved here.) This means you need to have a premixing bucket available & a pump to mix it overnight. This is not exactly the kind of fishcare a newbie may want to get into right away.

Well if the tank is empty there is no bio to worry about. And i wouldnt say having a premixing bucket aka "any clean plastic container" is very difficult seeing as most people own or know how to buy plastic buckets. And you dont need a pump to disolve salt into water. Its does it on its own and if you want to help it out your hand moving water is much cheaper and just as effective.

It bothers me when people make simple things seem difficult. For so long I avoided salt anything because all the marine people make it seem like an impossible task, but really its not that hard. Some people like to make things seem harder than they are so that when they do it it seems like more of an accomplishment.

I would say go for the GSP. Its right for the tank size you want and a really cool fish.

salt is not an impossible hobby, but its a hobby that requires more patience. premixing salt should be dont always unless your setting that tank up for the first time. salt breaks down and the chemistry of the water changes as it does, and doing this to a tank with corals and fish can and may eventualy kill them.
