saltwater newbie attempting a 55 gallon reef

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got three more corals yesterday...two heads of frogspawn, some leather coral, and then a third one that I can't remember the name of. All seem to be doing pretty well so far. One of the heads of frogspawn hasn't entirely opened up yet but I think it will be ok.

I've got my tank at a steady 79 degrees now. I had to disassemble my fan unit and unplug one of the four fans because it was bringing the temp down too much, and even still I think my heater is having to work a little harder than it should. I think its finally levelled out though.

Still looking for answers to the questions a few posts back if anybody feels like answering them.

Here are some pics of the new corals....

Thanks! I love it....its a little more involved than freshwater but I think that makes it more rewarding. Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't want to give up my 180 freshwater tank either.

Whatcha got in the 180?

Thinbar datnoid, black arowana, motoro stingray, 2 black ghost knives, and a pleco. I'm supposed to get two more dats and some clown loaches sometime soon, just waitin' on a vendor. Here is a link to some recent pics if you want to take a look....

BTW, I just looked at your recent addition thread....tank is looking great! Are you planning on eventually adding corals or just sticking with FOWLR?

Thanks...im hopeing to adding some more corals, but im reading up on this butterfly and everybody says that he might nip at corals. So i dont know, we'll see how he does with the few zoa's i have in there now.

Oh, I didn't see that you had zoas in already...very nice. That butterfly fish is sweet. Now that I've got a pretty good variety of corals in my tank I think I'm going to start exploring my fish stocking options also.

just a small colony of watermelon zoas i picked up for cheap nothing special. Just make sure the fish are reef safe. Hate to spend all kinds of money on coral so a fish can eat well, lol.

I got a couple more corals last night....I love craigslist! They are purple hammer coral and I think montipora. I'm just going off what I can remember the guy telling me so if I accidentally mis-identify any of these corals please let me know...and that goes for previous posts also. From what I understand the montipora is a little more difficult to care for, so any advice on how to get it to thrive (or any of my other corals for that matter) would be appreciated. Here are some pics....
