Saltwater vs Freshwater fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's what we are leaning towards. I just have to make sure I learn all about the saltwater tanks before starting it. I have been reading on the forums and some internet research, but still have more to learn before we actually start the set up and decide for sure.

It's not to hard to learn. You just need to know the basic equipment, and what parameters to watch and then a lot of it is just experience over time. I would start out with some hardy fish in FOWLR tank and go from there. This forum is a great place to learn.

Thank you. And I agree this forum is a great place. It has helped me with what ended up being simple fixes to my current tank, but very useful information.

I don't think common sense has anything to do with it some people don't do research first and impulse buy and some lfs will not educate them even if they know this all about sales in most cases.

If you think about it the cost aspect really is common sense.

Saltwater will always be more expensive than freshwater. Just the salt alone puts costs up for each water change. While you can decorate a freshwater tank with some gravel a saltwater tank needs live rock being an important part of the filtration system. Live rock is not cheap. So yeah, it's common sense that saltwater will always be more expensive.

Saltwater isn't THAT different from freshwater. Couple days of good research and you should be good :)

I am starting a clownfish tank, and a lion fish tank, soon. I dislike the waste of salt/water when doing water changes, each gallon is about 25 cents, lol.
Lol I already have the waste of water issue with my oranda I have to do frequent water changes.

Really? :o **** costs me $2 a gallon!

admittedly i don't mix it myself

Yikes! it's about 25 cents per gallon for me too. $2 is a bit rich for my blood.

I buy the ready mixed RO salt water from local shop. $10 for 5g so costs me $14 a week for water changes as i change 7g weekly on my tank. Only a nano marine setup but it does add up!

I'm too frugal (AKA cheap) to spend that much on water changes, though mixing can be a pain, I have a 65 gallon container that I fill an mix at 1 time, then don't have to create water for many months. Makes it a bit easier and cheaper at 25 cents per gallon.

I've just closed down my salt water tank and I'm going back to freshwater. Got fed up with buying ro water every couple of weeks, buying salt, mixing salt water every week for water changes, testing salinity and topping the tank off with ro every day etc. The fish and corals are amazing but I love predatory freshwater fish and American cichlids just as much so all of the extra work/costs/electricity usage wasn't worth it for me.
