Salvini and Geophagus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was hoping they would do okay for awhile, until I got a larger tank. They will be 1.5"-2" not sure how fast A. Heckelii grow however.

They are very slow growers.

Well Salvini went to LFS. I have A. Heckelii and a candy stripe pleco, seems so empty. Btw I am not seeing that A. Heckelii reach 13" I'm reading max size of 6-8".

Read my post again -- I said the 55 gallon tank is usually 13". ;) I wouldn't keep most 8" cichlids in a tank with the footprint of a 55 gallon, just because they tend to be active and seem cramped in smaller tanks.

I have a salvini in a 72 gallon with own loaches and an angel fish and everyone gets ing fine. Each fish has their own personality so who knows you could get a super mellow one like mine or a murderer

This is true but the odds are against you with a salvini. They're typically really aggressive. Oscars on the other hand, they can swing both ways.

One heckelii in a 55g is going to get fairly boring fairly quickly IMO. Get a group of them and get a bigger tank, or maybe trade it in for a group of something similar but smaller, perhaps Geophagus 'Red Head Tapajos'?

This would depend on what she intends to upgrade to. Upgrading to a 75 doesn't really change the situation. If we are talking about any tank that is 6' or longer, definitely look into getting a group of something. I love my geophagus red heads. Beautiful fish when adults and very active and entertaining IMO.

The threadfin can reach 12", but 8-10" is a lot more common. Problem with getting a group is that they have super high conspecifics. Pairs will form and end with one killing the other 9 times out of 10. If you are going to upgrade to something larger than a 200, I would say go for a group of threadfins.

I would advice to set your sights on a 125 or larger tank. Threadfins seem to do perfectly fine with anything that it can't fit in its mouth or that leaves it alone. Mine is in with a super red severum of equal size and 4 geo red heads of 2/3 its size and everyone gets along just fine. With a 6' tank, you could keep the threadfin and then focus on getting other SA cichlids that it will do well with. Severum, festivum, geophagus (small size geos in the 6" range are best because they require groups of 4 or more), acaras, Krobia, and Heroina would all be good tankmates for a threadfin off the top of my head. Of course there are many more options. :)
