i recently purchased a 55 gallon tank, i was debating using a sand bottom. I have messy eaters though, OSCARS! lol is their any way to clean sand easy like you can with gravel and a siphon?
thank you,
mike

same as cleaning gravel but just skim above the surface of the sand... do it once.. you will figure it out after about 3 seconds

I find sand easier on the maintenance. If there is flow in the water nothing should settle, my sand is always clean until the filter starts to clog and the flow is reduced

Snoskate... theres a problem with the 55. My car might not be in working order so i dontk know if ill be able to drive it up or not... which is going to be a huge problem soon.

Sand is easy to clean. Put the end of the hose in a bucket, and skim the end thats in the tank over the surface. If you suck up any sand, it will sink to the bottom of the bucket, and you can rinse it and put it back in the tank. I would do that when I had too much algae; I'd suck up the algae and the sand it was attached to and just clean it and put it back

just wondering, do you mean oscar or oscars?

Just make sure you use a sand filter. I screwed up my AC110 hob filter by using flurite as a substrate. This is similiar to sand. Sand in my opinion is a pain in the ***. I like the way natural gravel looks also.

Sand is very easy to clean, but it tends to look dirty much faster because things don't settle in it, but on top of it for all to see. Especially with black sand.
