Stay away from Undergravel filtration....

Other than that, you should be fine if you size up the filtration to your tank/bio load.

Alot of the members on here use pool filter sand.

What is your stock list? Tank size? Current filtration?

i wanna try sand as well.. i think it looks better in pics.. [:

75 gallon tank. It hasn't been set up yet, but I have only fish so far, a green texas cichlid, I am still trying to decide on what else to put in it, I'll be getting a canister filter for it. I was thinking of getting 2 larger cichlids( a green terror or festae) and then some smaller ones. Also I will getting a syno cat.

Pool filter sand is waaaaay better than play sand. As far as canisters and play sand, any with the prop on top like xp's are better than on bottom like mag 350.

Yup, if you are looking at getting some sand, go to a pool store and look at their pool filter sand. Looks great, is VERY clean stuff, and I have it on two of my tanks :)

Mine is white with black flecks throughout. I washed it twice before using it, but the water didn't even turn colour when I was washing it.

i have a dumb noob question. i had fine sand in my 125gal tank and i always had a problem with picking up too much sand when i am cleaning up all of the poop that ends up on the bottom of the tank. also when my pleco's are moving around they kick up alot of sand that ends up in my canister filter. is this a problem that everyone has or is it just me.

The pool sand does not stir up like the fine or play sand. I put a section of 5/8 stiff tubing in place of the gravel vac. on my python. It lifts the debris off the sand before it picks the sand up.
