Ok I really love the crisp clean look of sand In a freshwater tank BUT I don't know how to properly clean it and keep it clean. I want to put it in my 250g with a wet/dry and sump setup. Any thoughts ? Thanks
You have to vacuum over the sand so that the sand doesn't get sucked up. I just use circulation pumps to keep waste suspended, then I don't have to vacuum.
I keep my tanks w ALOT of water circulation to try to keep the dirty going down to the filter and not in the tank. Does this keep a "sand cloud" stirred up? I am all about overkill for my filtration
petco has a new brand of sand that has bigger granules and will prob not cloud. that cost a fortune for a 250g. i picked up some sand from florida and that worked great and barely went up the siphon even when i tried. dont get playsand. poolfilter sand works very nice. if your gonna have monster fish then that means monster poop that you dont want suspended in your open water.
you can drag 1/3 of the inlet across the sand to turn it over and to vacuum up the bottom remnants....kinda like raking it but do this slowly so you dont suck up too much

I have an FX5, AQ110, and Four 500 GPH circulation pumps (on a 75 gallon) and I don't have sand flying all over the tank because of it... I only ever get sand in my filter because when my female M. auratus digs, she likes to spit the sand out directly into the FX5 intake.

Really depends on the grain size of your sand. The PFS I have is coarse enough that I can vac the top 1/2 inch. Stir and repeat. It cleans quite nice, finer grains mean less vac more hovering above.
