Sand... Do u vacuum it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use a 2ft long vac tube and treat pfs like fine gravel. Don't let it pick up more than a few inches of sand or it will pull it all the way to the top. With my big fish I perfer to go bare bottom and use power heads to suspend the waste in the column. Imo gravel is better than sand when it comes to bio stability (just a thought).

I have a 2 ft tube I use on my 175 that had pea gravel and river rock. I just wanted a lil different but still natural look in the other tank. What makes the difference for bio in gravel and sand?

Sand will pack together tighter and reduce the oxygen available to the bb in the substrate.

I bought sand and unfortunately it does get sucked up by the vacuum, I just hover it over the sand to pick up any thing or what I'll do is I'll just mix up the sand every once and a while and get all the crap out then I'll do a water change, that pretty much gets everything out.

Well I just installed it today. I removed the rocks and pea gravel which made a big ol nasty mess out of the water. So I did a 50% water change and added the PFS I'm just waiting on the filters and the crud to settle

You realize by removing your cycled gravel you going to have to let the your tank mostly cycle again.

i use a powerhead which is on a few hours each day. i also use a fish net with a small mesh and go about in a circular motion, right on top of the "dead areas" in the tank the powerhead can't get to. Catches big pieces and I just take em out.

As for sand, you're supposed to rotate it every once in a while. The dirty stuff will sink into the lower layers and will need to be dug up to expose them
