Sand... Do u vacuum it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tank has been running 3 weeks so it probably hadn't established a good gravel bed of bacteria. I had a not so brilliant idea of using larger stones w a small amount of gravel to fill in the cracks well problem is the rocks where to large to be able to vacuum any at all so I was gonna have to pull it out anyways.

petco has a new brand of sand that has bigger granules and will prob not cloud. that cost a fortune for a 250g. i picked up some sand from florida and that worked great and barely went up the siphon even when i tried. dont get playsand. poolfilter sand works very nice. if your gonna have monster fish then that means monster poop that you dont want suspended in your open water.

I have playsand right now and keeping it clean / getting rid of the cloud has been a nightmare. I found a lot of sources online that seemed to suggest it'd work. So far it's been tough.

Mine over the course of 5 years has dropped from 2 inches to a little over 1 inch deep. I vacuum it regularly, but once every couple months I have to stir the sand. I have tons of circulation, but thats not enough to keep it clean.

I attached a clothes hanger on the end of my vacuum with duck tape. Lol, Might be a little redneck but it keeps the vacuum up off the sand about 2 to3in and it stirs it up so all the nasty gets sucked up.

I would hope the duct tape isn't in the water because that's what it seems like if I read the post right
If it is that will most likely be leaching bad chemicals into your aquarium

On tanks that I use finer sand in I used a larger than normal suction tube(a 20oz bottle with the bottom cut out), and fitted a ball valve on the hose to adjust the flow of water. Works like a charm, looks a little ugly though.
