I am thinking of changing my tank from 1/4" black gravel to black sand. Does anybody know what to use? Is there any sand out there that is a reasonable price? Home depot, lowes...etc???
I have seen a picture in here of a tank that has sand in it, i think it looks sweet.!~:headbang2

what down falls are there to sand or gravel? I would think that sand would be harder to clean???

It is much harder for people moving from gravel to sand. People with gravel carelessly gravel vacuum because they do not have to worry about the gravel being sucked up, that is not the case with sand.. it will easily get sucked up with the garbage. It takes time to get used to it but once you get used to it its just fine, and in my opinion, looks much better!

I just bought the sand from a pet store to avoid all the rinsing and dust issues.

Pool filter sand, cheap & it's already very clean...just rinse once to make sure.

Do a search on here for more info.

Haha,

Looks like this time of the day is mod-time. Three mods in a row, that's pretty funny.

I have no clue where to get black sand, but I am sure pool filter sand will not be it. You may have to get it online or from a local pet store, which means it'll cost $$$.

I maintain my sand with Malaysian Trumpet Snails - no vacuuming at all. My canisters suck in the detritus that accumulates on top of the sand

BTW: You'll have to change your user name when you activate that 125 gal. :D

Go with sand, looks 1 million X better and also is cleaner.. especially if u have a ray and some geo's like i do and they constantly stir it for me.. SAND SAND SAND!

I just came here to post a thread on the very same topic!
I set up a new 125 yesterday that came with sand and it looked so beautiful that I kept it instead of using the gravel. I transferred as many of my Trumpet snails as I could, so hopefully they'll breed back to their old proportions and keep the sand clean along with my Mystery snails.

Well I have had sand for a couple of days now and I cant believe that I ever paid for GRAVEL:!!! That stuff is expensive and sand (pool filter sand) looks much better!!! I havent done a water change yet, i may change my mind after that??? :)

Just consider it a storm, turn off your filters and it will die down in a hour.

yea the only downside to sand is cleaning. and the fish crap is always visible. my fish crap a lot. and sand always gettin kickd up and i assume that cant be good for the filters in the long run. so i switched to black gravel.
