Sand or gravel? Help me out please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have not seen a single terrarium where gravel would look better than sand. AND it is much cheaper at $3 for a 50lbs bag at lowes. just be sure to soak it overnight before you put it into the tank, this allows impurities to float to the top.

I have never had a problem cleaning it either. just use a siphon and hold it just above the sand, it will pick up the crap and leave the sand...

Ok so as long as I rinse rinse rinse and throw it in the tank I should be good to god -'d clean the filters and everything and get pool filter sand at hd of a hardware store to have the good heavy sand. I should be ok
Thanks mfk I'll try and snap some pica of the set up and everything when done

I agree with everyone else. The playground sand is great. We used some finer sand in our biocube and its a pita. It clogged the filter and when ever we vacuum there is sand all over in my sink. I suggest taking all the gravel out as we did a parcel change and when we went to get the rest out it got all mixed up and I'm not loving the gravel mixed with it. The colored sands are nice looking, but make sure they aren't too fine.

cool well ima go pick some pool filter sand up after school or well what's cheaper that or playground sand? I want a white/natural color sand not a brown color

playground sand is cheaper but not by much. Pool filter sand is bright white and playground sand is an off white/ khaki color. it is just a personal preference. I like the look of the playground sand but both are nice.

in that case playground sand it is :D
They both are the same grain and same stuff pretty much right?

from what I've seen, the playground sand is slightly finer than pool filter sand. pool filter sand is your best bet. look in the construction area, near concrete, leveling sand and gravel. quickrete is the brand. or just ask. those guys are nice enough.

play sand, pool filter sand, leveling sand. they are all good, and kept right next to eachother at home depot. go check them out and pick which one you like best.

just rinse it.

I put batches of the pool filter sand in an old pillow casing and then shoved a hose in it and let it run for about 10 minutes. A lot of fine crap came out, but it still clouded up the water a little bit. I think maybe some agitation was rinsing it would have helped.

I still like sand much better then rocks, easier to clean.

well guys the tank is drained gravel is taken out and the fish are transfered to my 30g tank for now. im waiting for my parents to get home so we can go to the store :D
