Having had gravel and sand in my tanks, personally i prefer the look of sand > gravel... plus, if you have a lot of bottom dwelling fish, they will probably appreciate the sand more...
from what i've read on here the only downside to having TOO MUCH sand is that there could be air pockets where waste rots and creates ammonia. a stirring of the sand every once in a while should solve that problem

I use pool filter sand in my tanks and it does not cloud the tank at all. It worked out very well. However, it has caused some impeller damage on my tanks that I do not use a fluval cannister filter. The sand does not bother my fluval at all. I have a pretty deep sand bed, about 2.5"
