Sand or pea gravel?

Is there a super heavy sand out there that is safe for aquariums that I don't have to worry much about stirring it up easily and running a good filter?

I've had both you .have to clean gravel every wc. If you get Pfs and have enough filtration you never need to vac!

Now I know with sand you don't want it to be too thick because it can trap lethal gasses that will release when the sand gets stirred up, so what is the general rule of thumb for sand bed thickness to avoid gas pockets?

It can be as thick as you want! I simply take my hand and stir half the sand in the tank every thirty days and the other half the next month. Never had a prob, your have to let it sit for months to do some damage, perhaps even longer depending on the thickness.
