Sand or pea gravel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It can be as thick as you want! I simply take my hand and stir half the sand in the tank every thirty days and the other half the next month. Never had a prob, your have to let it sit for months to do some damage, perhaps even longer depending on the thickness.

Excellent. Thank you.

I have wanted to use very coarse sand, you know the stuff that almost has small gravel in it. Best of both worlds.

I didn't see pdandys post. Nice.

I've tried pea gravel, ugly colorful gravel, play sand, river rock, pool filter sand and bare bottom. I find pool filter sand to be the best. Easy to keep clean and looks good IMO.

Is there a benefit to having both?

The reason I added sand to the pea gravel was for my loaches. I didn't want the rocks hurting their barbels. After a while the sand has kinda worked its way to the top and I really like the way it looks. Plus my cichlids love moving the rocks around too.

Okay. So no benefit really, just looks good. I really do like the look of this, so I will have to see if I can work both into the budget. I still can't find pea gravel. PFS is going to be about $10 per 50 pound bag. I am thinking I will need about 3 bags. 2 if I can find cheap pea gravel to mix in.

I like THIS idea....:)

There is nothing like watching a bunch of geo's working over a bed of sand!

Definitely go for PFS, an inch deep is fine. It won't damage canister filters at all (sand won't find its way through all the media to the impellar). If you add an HOB just make sure to keep the suction short.

Burt :)

Excellent. Thanks. :)

I found pool filter and for pretty cheap at a pool store (go figure LOL) down the street, but the only two places I found pea gravel offer it really cheap, but only offer it by the half ton! I definitely don't need anywhere near that much.
