Sand: play or pool filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use pool filter sand, because it's cheap and clean.
It looks great in my RES habitat, but I would prefer it to be darker in my bichir tank.
Attached a couple pics. The higher intensity of the aquarium lights make it look a lot whiter than it is, but I'd still prefer darker.

I ended up going the extra mile so to speak and got 3M colorquartz in black s-grade. This way my bichirs will darken up real nice. Loving it so far.

3M was a good choice. Heard nothing but good things about it. I've used both pool filter and play sand and will never use play sand again. I actually used a mix of play sand and gravel and the play sand had completely disappeared over the course of a year from accidental siphoning and getting sucked into filters. A royal pain in the rear. I absolutely love my pool filter sand, but could see how it might be too light colored for bichirs.
