Ok guys, finally finished had the sand settle down after weeks of hard work and washing, and cycling the tank, here is the final result sans cichlids!

Do not buy play sand. If you get a cheapo sand that isn't made for aquariums the only one I would consider is pool filter sand.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with using play sand. I've been using it for 3 years in my loach tank and 2 years in my gourami/cory tank.
The kind I got from Menard's (for those not in the midwest, it's like Lowe's/Home Depot) has tiny rocks in it, too, so it looks more natural than PFS. The only drawback is that it takes longer to rinse.
