satanoperca leucosticta??

That is 100% a Satanoperca jurupari not a Satanoperca leucosticta. The facial barring is the quickest way to tell the difference. S. leucosticta have varing amounts of spotting on the muzzle depending on the locale varient but never barring.

Which is why I was confused about my cichlid. When I brought him home, he looked like this:

He has the jurupari bars but is a little more sparkly than normal.

So is mine a hybrid or was it just an ugly duckling with unusual similarities to another species?
 
The facial spotting takes some time to fill in, but if you notice even on your earlier pics ... it does have the spots under the dorsal fin. That's the easier way to tell when they are younger.
