Satanoperca Mapiritensis Holding (EPIC DAY FOR ME)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congrats Justin, that's a great accomplishment not only for you, but for the community in general. Best of luck to you in raising the fry.

Update: interesting behavior from last night/today to note for you guys. The male is beating on the female pretty hard. He also takes a turn in brooding the fry although there is noting there. Both parents are "attempting" to brood but there are no eggs or fry remaining. I can see in the mouth and there is nothing there in either fish but none the less, they both attempt to brood as if for the practice.

Sorry to hear no eggs are left, like you said before they usually mess it up the first couple times.. Hopefully the next batch will go good..

Thanks guys!

So this has me stumped, any ideas from the community? The male no longer acts as if he is brooding, but the female is still acting as though she has eggs/fry. Even more strange is she is filling her mouth with air and literally brooding it for minutes at a time...? You can tell from the below video she is very buoyant from this behavior (snout down, cadaul fin up) and having to forcefully swim down to keep herself from floating. Any ideas on why she would do this? Anyone else experience this with other mouth brooders?

The fact they are more interested in slow flow and things like leaves over all else to me points to the end of the rainy season over white water. Thoughts?
It makes me think they breed in the floodplain.

My OH do it sometimes, it's weird and annoying to me LOL and I have no clue why they would do it. I am not sure if any of my Satanoperca have ever done it though.

Thanks so much for the reply Ed! Good to know your OH's do this too. My OH colony spawned constantly and never did this. Very odd behavior.

Ironic you say the floodplain, this was the "inspirational" pic I posted in the thread on building the tank a few months back. That is what I envsioned being the most likely natural habitat for them.
