Saw a gorgeous creamsicle Midas, but...

I really want to. REALLY want to. But I can't afford a 75g right now.

I keep trying to convince myself to get him by saying to myself, "He'd be in a 40g versus the 20g he's in." But I'd still feel bad keeping him in that size tank.

If my con has to be euthanized tomorrow, I'm pretty sure I'll want him even more.

Do you live near Daytona? If you do, stop by Daytona Aquarium. The owner has an awesome selection of cichlids. They range from wild caught to F2. He will order for you if he doesn't have the cichlid that you want. He has been in the business over 30years, a very knowledgable and kind fellow. I am going back in another week to pick up another Vieja or something else. If he has a creamsicle I will let you know. If you are too far I would be willing to get a small one for you and hold it until you are able to get it. But that all depends on how far away you are from me. The distance may be too long for you. I know how it is to want a fish for a long time, see it finally but can't get it at the time.

I'm pretty far from Daytona Beach (I think 4-5 hours). My problem is I'm way too picky. I've raised 4 Midas before, none of which turned out just how I wanted them. The large one in my LFS is closest to what I'm looking for. I do love getting smaller ones and growing them out, but it hasn't worked in the past for me because I have a pre-set idea of exactly how I want it to look when full-grown, and then I'm disappointed.

I understand. It's your tank so you should definitely get what you're happy with. I hope circumstances will change enough for you to go get the creamsicle that you have been waiting for.

Gruff, I've dropped off a lot of cichlids with Gary in Daytona. His prices are a bit high but sometimes you can find really nice stuff there that you'd otherwise have to mail-order. He also gets fish from Don Conkels occasionally.

Discretion is the better part of valor sometimes. I agree with not getting the fish if you cant afford it. I'm assuming your still in Vet school from the last time we talked? (I almost bought that 100g from you when you were in bama) The right fish will come along, just might take a little while and by that time you might have a 210g already set up! Sorry to hear about that Con. One of the best looking calicos on this forum IMO.

Thanks :-/

I graduated from vet school last May, but decided to go for a Master's degree in Aquatic Animal Health, so I'm still a poor student paying tuition.

My problem with seeing special fish in stores is that I feel the need to "rescue" them. When I saw that Midas today, he was sooooo much more mellow than the last time, almost like he didn't care about what happened. It's as if being in that 20g for a month has broken his spirit. (Corny to say that, I know).

My other option for housing is a large stock tank, which I could more easily afford. I've been wanting a 150g fiberglass stock tank that has an acrylic viewing window, but I can't quite afford it. A 100-150g Rubbermaid or Tuff Stuff stock tank would provide a hell of a lot more room than a 75g glass tank, because its footprint is roughly 4x3 feet. I just need to decide if it's really worth it to buy a new setup just for this fish.

I did email someone in Ocala with a 75g full setup on Craigslist for $200. I could then sell my 29g setup for roughly $100 and not be too far in the red.

ya know. if you have the room in you budget, you should do it. I had a similar problem, my lfs had a BEAUTIFUL green terror, same deal, awesome everything, but i chose not to get him. And i showed up every 2 weeks, and he was there in the same 20 gallon...and it was probably about 3-4 months of this and i had decided i couldn't take it anymore and was going to pick him up. And i bought a 125g and showed up, and asked if i could buy him. and they told me he had died...it sucked. thats my dream fish and i have been trying to grow one up as beautiful as he was. So if you have the budget room and this is indeed your dream fish. Go for it.
sorry for the rant haha

Get him lol you've obibiously been wanting him long enough. Now as for places to get SA cichlids around northern Fl anyone got any good ideas, I'm sick of driving from jax to Gainesville and I tried calling that Daytona aquarium place to get the hours but no one answered. Any info as to where people get there goods would be much appreciated. Sorry didn't mean to derail.
