I think I saw something like that when I was in Hawaii. I was in the water and it was happening about 20ft away from me. Freaked me out enough to slowly get out of the water... lol 
id say possible jellyfish, plankton gathering, or USO's in other words Unidentified Submerged Objects..all 3 are complete possibilities..but its gonna rather be unknown

Yeah 1 time I was in the water and a fin popped up right next to me and I took off fast. And I looked back and it turned out to be a dolphin. Scared the hell out of me.
The ocean is scary I don't even go in the water anymore.
I think that it was a combination of plankton and the mushrooms that you probably ate earlier that evening....
There are a rather large number of sea jellies, ctenophores and cephalopods are all capable of bio luminescence.
It is more likely that you saw a single larger organism than a group of smaller ones as the smaller ones don't often create light that can be seen from very far away.
Squid/ jelly/ octopus/ cuttle fish..... lots of options.
