say hello to my varanus panoptes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice argus, but that substrate needs improving.. He needs a deep soil substrate to burrow in.

Very nice argus .It looks like you've been taking excellent care of it which is awesome because most people tend to be terrible at caring for monitors.

The only thing that I would change is the substrate; a 50/50 soil/sand mix (ratio can be adjusted if need be) is the best substrate possible for any monitor as it allows for proper burrowing & other benefits.

i'll see what i can do with the substrate. The big problem is the size of the enclosure and the fact that it's located in the attic. The current substrat is fluffy and has not much weight. I fear that samd would be too much for the house.

Yes, that certainly could pose a problem. It might be worth getting a second opinion as to whether the house will be able to take the weight of a soil/sand mix substrate.

The thing is, that my tanks are located in the next room and have all combined almost one ton weight. The monitor enclosure is huge. That much sand would add almost another ton in weight. Its a compromise. He has a huge enclosure now with all stuff to climb. But i don´t want change the substrate. I would not feel good then. And thats the best sign to rethink about it ;)

Where did you get him?

You do have to remember, total weight doesn't matter as much as weight per square foot. So the cage size doesn't matter, it's more dependent on how deep the layer of dirt is.

For instance, you could have a 20 foot long, 20 foot wide cage, and if you put in six inches of substrate, it would weigh about 13 tons in total.

But if you had a 4 foot by 2 foot enclosure, and put in two feet of substrate, it may only weigh one ton, but it would be more focused on one spot. So even though it would weigh less in total, it would actually be more likely to fall through the floor.
