Open water certified myself. Unfortunately, I don't get to use it as much as I would like.

I've been diving for about twenty years, certified for fifteen. I am with Miguel on the equipment. You may not want to go out and buy $1000 worth of gear until after you have tried it, but if you plan on diving long-term it is well worth it. I have seen a lot of really crappy rental equipment, especially in Mexican/Caribbean dive shops. To start out you will definitely want your own mask/snorkel/fins (don't cheap out on these!) and probably your own wetsuit - you couldn't pay me to wear a rental suit (people pee in them)....

The O.P. being in SoCal he should have plenty of good diving within easy driving range, if you don't mind moderately cold water.

Open water certified as well.
The best place I ever went was in Belize. Absolutely amazing. I'm going to try and make it back there next year.

I very much prefer stone colder waters than tropical seas to dive.

Always get the feeling am diving in a sw tank....

A friend of mine is a dive instructor so I've made it all the way to divemaster for the cost of gas to get us out to the dive spots.

I really want to go to Belieze and Bon Aire for some diving trips. So far for me the best places have always been in the Riveria Maya region.

Nice. I've seen some awesome photos in/around Riviera Maya.
I highly recommend Belize

Im certified. it really is alot of fun, probably most fun thing ive ever done aside from skydiving

Never did, never will do, on account if being and old geezer, sky diving. BUT i prefer spear fishing to scuba diving, without one sole inch of a doubt.
