Belize is a great place to dive, biggest reef on the planet outside of Australia... Bahamas is pretty good too, the visibility is excellent and there's some good wrecks. Swimming up and having a ship like this come into view is awesome.
Or when you're 50 feet down and you realize this is all you've got out in the middle of the ocean
Woe thanks guts for the pics and the info definitely going to get done just need to save up some cash first and yeah I don't want to take a chance on stuff that will keep me alive Haha I've always wanted to go spear fishing can you use scuba to go spear gushing in so cal? You can spearfish with SCUBA gear. The "purists" frown on it, but it is completely legal. Abalone is different, collecting them with SCUBA gear is a very big crime.
Well, the U.S. is civilized by most definitions, but we do have much more liberal hunting/fishing regulations than most other developed countries. I have only been spearfishing once with SCUBA, for Ling Cod. Considering that they are found at the bottom in 60-80 feet of cold water, it would be very difficult to free-dive for them. I think as long as size/limit regulations are followed it shouldn't matter if you take the fish with or without SCUBA or with a hook and line.
I'm certified. I bought all my own gear also. The only regret is the tank. I don't go as much as I would like so the tank is just a pain to have around. You have to get it inspected every year...I haven't got it inspected for years now, so it just sits there.
I'm advanced certified for about 10 years now.. I don't get out much anymore with my kids in sports though.
I would def buy my own mask, snorkel, & fins.. The other stuff you can get away with rentals to get through the classes.. Then i'd look into buying your own gear.. Make sure you do a lot of research on gear, a lot of guys on craigslist are selling old and outdated gear. And a lot of tanks are out of cert and some can't even be re-certified.
One bit of advice though, don't cheap out on the fins.. I bought the cheap ones and after one class and trying the instructors Bio Fins out i was sold .. Wen't and bought new ones before the second class.. I didn't know what the instructor was talking about when he told me the cheap ones were like swimming with 2x4's strapped to my feet. Well i do now..lol
