Sea Horses

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
also we found it very benefitial to put a sponge filter on the canister intake as they grazed on the stuck foods quite often. and cut down on fiter maintnance.

Personally, I don't think anything is "hard" to keep as long as you do plenty of research and are willing to put forth the demands they require. They do have more requirements, but they sure are worth it! My LFS has a nano-reef set up with some and it's possibly the smallest, and coolest, tank there.

ive always wanted to do seahorses too, but they look so fragile and it sortof scares me.. but when i go to the LFS, thats the tank i always look at! lol.. let us know if you get any!

Hippocampus hippocampus is the single species protected - Appendix II. (Sea dragons are a different topic). All animals kept/sold/traded must be from captive stock now due to collection restrictions.

How hard it is varies with what species is being kept. What species are we talking about keeping?

seahorses are not illeagal to keep but they have stopped harvesting lots of species of wild ones. as far as keeping them, we had ours 2 years a group of three, and a pipe fish. they were kept in a 30 hex w/ mag350 filter, a stack of live rock up the middle darn near to the top, and live seaplants of some sort(looked like fern leaves). ours were fed mysis, brine, and we once found a flake food they took for a while. they had no fish or inverts w/ them. we often hatched and feed live brine. they were not hard to keep just had to think about what your dealing with. we had the chance too get a breeding pair but the wifey has become the crazy puffer lady as of late, so maybe after the move and the new 90gallon. feel free to ask any spiciefics if you like.:) also ours were dwarf seahorses.

careful with the live rock, there is a micro-organism that can wipe out tanks of seahorses that nestle in live rock. they are called hydroids if i recall from a book *goes to book piles and re reads*
