So the pass month I've bumped into 3 different anglers at a couple of local bars here is HB California. Start up a conversation about fishing. They tell me all their stories of monsters they've wrangled out at sea. But me being more of a fresh water kinda dude. I dont know I really dont care for salt water set ups or species. I love the Amazon, Congo, Mekong river systems. But every time I bring up fresh water species they shrug it off like its not worth their time.

Now Im well aware of the beast that lurk in the oceans such as Marlin, Wahoo, Tuna, Sail fish, Goliath Groupers and all that good stuff. But the river systems have some beast's of their own. Such as Arapaima Gigas, Mekong giant catfish, Sturgeon, Alligator Gar, Paraiba catfish, Goliath african tiger fish, Mekong fresh water sting rays, Goonch ect.

Now yes some salt water species get larger but deep sea fishermen from what I see are not educated in river monsters, at least not the dudes I talked to cause when I asked about Arapaima and mekong giant cat they really dont seem to know what I'm talking about. Am I being biased or is there really no comparisons when it comes to Sea monsters and river monsters?

I think there both great in there diffrent ways

well you fish completely different set ups with fresh water and salt water, there both challenges. like fish keeping its all in your preference. I have had access to both salt and fresh water fishing since i was young, i love going off the coast and reeling in a 40 lb Striped Bass, but at the same time catching a 10lb carp on a light reel is just as difficult. the rod and reel makes things simpler or more difficult. Size wise Salt water fish are wayyyyyyyyy bigger though.

Its cause they got a 100,000,000,000 gallon fish tank and fresh only have a 1,000 stream or lake here and there

I personally love south and central American fish over all others but as far as monsters go they really cant touch what the sea has to offer, I don't think the rivers and lakes can compete with the home of the of the biggest fish in the world.

the difference was already pointed out in my opinion. while freshwater does have its share of monsters, ocean dwelling monsters will always be greater in numbers and size.

freshwater, the largest body, would be michigan-huron, which is only 45,445 sq mi surface area. in comparison, the pacific covers approx. 69,375,000sq m of surface area.

it boils down to the same thing as it does in captivity. more room and more water = bigger monsters

ya i dont like salt water fish either i dont know why the colorful and what not just doesnt feel the same

if you think about it, running into a fish in the ocean that weighs a few hundred pounds is common place, where as arapaima is nearly impossibly to reach in the first place so obviously they won't know so much about it. its easier to land trophy fish in the ocean, there more available, easier to reach. Marlin its common to catch one a few hundred pounds with fresh water fish reaching that size is nearly unheard of.

i think the largest is baikal in siberia holds 1/5 of all freshwater. thank you blue planet lol

saltwater fish are way bigger. i also think saltwater fish are a bit more interesting overall then freshwater. but freshwater win buy a land slide in one category ease of maintenance. After owning saltwater tanks, when i think of how easy it is to drag a hose to my fresh tank turn in on and pour in some prime... i dont know its just amazing.

if we are talking total volume, then yes, lake baikal is the largest. however, its surface area is only 31,722sq. m.

/history lesson lol
