Lacey Act? really dude? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa

that thing is a giant piece of crap. apparently they are even trying to add some pythons to the that. No reason to but what ever.

Most of those are obsolete and need redone/overhauled completely. They arent completely worthless but they are obsolete, or just crap

Allow me to drop some knowledge on you in regards to the Lacey act.

Back in late 1800's early 1900's we had an era of free market hunting in the US. There were no wildlife regulations in regards to catch or take limits. This resulted in the near extinction of the bison, the extirpation of caribou from much of their natural range, the extinction of the passenger pigeon and the massive declines to near unsustainable levels of egrets, herons, birds of prey and waterfowl. The Lacey act was established to set guidelines at a federal level limiting the amount and kinds of animals a person could harvest legally.

In short the Lacey Act was established to crack down on over-exploitation of wildlife populations. News flash, it worked and still does. Ever wonder why you have fish limits and deer tags?

So while I'm at it I'll throw in the Migratory Bird Act to the list of things you don't believe work.

Please continue, I happen to have an extensive background in wildlife and conservation biology so I can do this all day if you'd like.

And as to an example as why these things work, The Island of Hispanola, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, have no legislation similar to the Lacey act. They only have two native species of mammal left on the entire island.

Unless you have no understanding of how conservation works you cannot possibly be a conservationist and not agree with the Lacey Act.

I do applaud you on your eloquent response.

sigh

look they work some what. most just are out dated and needs redone

LRM - I agree with your stance on the Lacey act, Endangered species act, etc. Saying that they are useless or cause more problems than they are worth is short sighted of what the intention and benefit that the laws provide. They provide law enforcement a way to ensure that species are not overfished/farmed/killed/threatened/etc. It is up to law enforcement to use the tools available to them, and the Lacey act is one such tool.

In the case of the Sea Shepherds, I am torn. I agree with their general idea of species conservation and to protect against the barbaric act of slaughtering whales. However, make no mistake that they are terrorists. I watched the show some time ago and watched the harpooning of a whale... how terrible. It was gut wrenching to be honest. However, later on, the Steve Irwin ship captained by Paul Watson intentionally rammed a Japanese vessel. Absolutely not acceptable.

I believe they are pirates, not terrorists, but it's a very fine line. I do believe Paul Watson is dangerous, wreckless, and absolutely puts other people's lives in danger every time he gets behind the "wheel." He has an iconic status among these supporters, and uses that to convince them to do unsafe things. He does however have a special relationship with celebrities, and they have done a considerable amount to support him. Bob Barker has donated millions, Martin Sheen has done the same. It's a good cause, but a misguided method of enforcement.

Everyone knows the Japanese whaling fleet is a sham. It's not for research, it's not for anything other than turning a profit by selling whale meat. It's a deplorable action and I hope that international law will stop this sooner rather than later. ATM, the Japanese are looking to remove the quotas entirely.

And the Ady Gil was meant to be an ocean-going vessel. It has the world record for circumnavigating the globe. It was designed as a wave piercer and thus the silly look. It was designed to go ~20ft below the surface cutting through waves.

I think they're justified to be there as the whales are being hunted in protected waters. If the governments won't do their job, people who believe strongly in that war are justified to take it on. Just as the state of AZ is now stepping in to do the government's job. If you don't enforce the laws, don't be surprised if someone else does. I don't know the whole story, but if Australia and Japan aren't there to site whaler vessels, wtf do you expect.
