I feel bad for posting this, but I've done a bunch of searches and haven't really found the answer to my question. Well, maybe I have because tons of people say to use Prime - which is what I'm using now.

My LFS carries a variety of water conditioners...The biggest bottle of Prime they carry is 250ml-8.5oz. They carry gallon jugs of Kordon Amquel + and Kordon NovAqua + (I think, it could be just plain amquel, not the plus). A small bottle of Prime is $10...a gallon of the Kordon is $50 (I think the NovAqua is $1 cheaper).

There's a sale coming up in the future where this stuff will be 30% off. That means $15 off a gallon of the Kordon which is a pretty nice savings. I'm just wondering how it rates compared to Prime. It's really not a savings if its not as good.

I found this in one of my searches:
http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/rev-cond.htm

It doesn't list the plus versions but does says NovAqua and is fairly close to Prime. I wonder if the plus version gives it that edge?

I actually got a small bottle of the NovAqua+ and used it on my last water change. Everything seemed to go just fine. However, that was one water change. There might be a totally different outcome after 4.

Thoughts? Experience? What do you use?

Prime user here. It kept my fish all alive during a 3.5 day power outage this past winter where all I could do was warm water changes, no filtration and no heat - the water temps dropped to mid 50's overnights. Had I not been dosing Prime throughout I can almost guarantee I would have lost all my fish. I never bothered to test it during this time but I know it would have been bad, however the Prime kept the fish safe.

For the last several years i've been using NovAqua+ as my dechlorinator during water changes and never had any issues.

After browsing this site actively for the last few months, it seems the general consensus is that Prime is the best bang for your buck, and all you need for water changes.

So I made the switch last month and have done a few water changes with Prime now, and everything is going smoothly. I honestly couldn't tell you which is 'better', so long as my water is dechlorinated im happy. But I guess Prime has the benefit of detoxifying ammonia/etc. I just used NovAqua because its what my LFS had. From what I've heard, AmQuel+ is basically the same thing as Prime, but isn't as concentrated as Prime, and is more expensive.

Prime. 250 mL treats 2,500 gallons for $6.19

vs

AmQuel+16 oz treats 960 gallons for $7.19

You also need to look at how much water each treats when comparing prices.

IMO, it's all about preference. Both will do the job. I used to use Kordon water conditioner and I was fine with that, but I switched to Prime since it seems to be more concentrated so I don't have to use as much.

Ive used gallons of amquel+ and gallons of prime. I feel they are equal as I have never noticed any difference between the slime coat in prime that is not in amquel +. They both do the job its a personal prefference but normally amquel is more expensive.

:WHOA:

How many gallons of tanks do you have in total Tcarswell? I over-dose Prime and I think my 250mL bottle will last quite awhile :D (125g).
