Seachem Stability: PUT TO THE TEST/blank slate (daily perams/pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In trying to eliminate all possible variables, I tested four of my other established tanks which are up and running. All four tested fine with both test kits. My highest readings in any of them were 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, and 10 Nitrates. So, it's not the test kits or testing procedures.

and please tell me what you are doing to get 10ppm nitrAtes...daily 50% waterchanges can't bring down my NitrAtes below 20-30ppm...
Weekly 33% waterchanges keep me at 40PPM and 40 or less are fine for my fish...

JK47 - my pH is 7.2 for this tank, andf I've never tested my kH. The API Master Test kit doesn't include this test. Is this something I should test?

zennzzo - As recommended on this forum (thread) I have not yet done any water changes on this tank. My Nitrates readings have been 20 ppm, not 10 ppm. The other tank I tested today that was at 10 ppm for Nitrates is a 75 gallon tank with my Aro, Clown and a JD. I am running two HOB (Emperor 400's) with charcoal and general filter media. One terra cotta pot and some standard black gravel substrate from Petco. Temp is 82 and they get prawns, pellets and feeders (once a week). This tank has been running almost 2 years (various inhabitants) but I typically do 40-50% water changes weekly. It's very close to a window so water changes are easy. Water is always crystal clear and they're active, good eaters and appear happy. I know 40-50% is high, but they seem to do well.

How old are these three fish?
and you are for sure getting 0 - 0 - 10 ppm with 2 emp400's on a 75g...testing AFTER you waterchange right?

Today results have me scratching my head even more....

Ammonia .00 ppm (mg/L)
Nitrate 10 ppm (mg/L)
Nitrite .50 ppm (mg/L)

I was really hoping to get a Motoro in this tank this weekend (which I'm not even sure this fellow MFK'r is going to let me buy anymore) but hopefully I'm getting closer.

zennzzo, PM sent.

Well no ammonia means your making progress. I would strongly advise against getting a motoro ray. Rays produce very large bioloads (despite the tanksize issue) and you will find yourself right back in the same boat if you were to add one. Once your readings are good give the tank little time to mature before adding any large fish. Add some prime to the tank to detoxify the nitrite until the tank catches up.

And on day 16....we have a winner!!!!:headbang2

Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrites 0 ppm
Nitrates 10 ppm

I think the fact that this took so long was user error, or combined with the fact that I may have gotten a bad batch. Regardless, it's ready to go. However the bad news is I lost my GT in this tank today. Not from water parameters or quality, but rather he jumped out. I removed the glass lids to caulk them into the hinges and he either jumped out or was chased out by a smaller Firemouth who is very territorial.

Well, thanks everyone for the help and patience along the way. Thanks JK47 and zennzzo!

I had my prized GT jump out as well...right through the glass tops that were sitting on the tank he was in. I had replaced them with .25" thick plate glass that he jumped into and right out of the tank and onto the hardwood floor...
The glass never broke and the only clue was, the one top was barely crooked out of place...Poor guy flopped almost 6' from the tank trying to get back in...I really miss him too...

but on a less somber note....
!!CONGRADULATIONS!!

I know the new Ray will be safe and happy and you can go to the top of the "Successful STABILITY" list now!...
~Ben
and thank the Good Lord for those fantastic H2o parameters...I would love to keep fish on that water system...
